Powering our growth areas

In our role as an electricity distributor, we build and operate an electrical network that transports electricity from the high voltage transmission network, then delivers it to our customers’ homes and businesses.

We are one of the most efficient distribution businesses in NSW, enabling us to constantly maintain a safe, reliable and affordable electricity supply for our customers and communities.

We deliver power to Australia’s third largest economy, Sydney’s Greater West. This area includes Sydney’s second international airport, its surrounding Aerotropolis, and the NSW Government’s priority land release areas in northwest and southwest Sydney. By 2030, these rapidly growing areas will be home to communities, similar in size to Canberra.

Over this time, the population of Greater Western Sydney is expected to swell by 900,000 and we are expecting to connect 20,000 new customers each year.

These priority growth areas are the result of the biggest coordinated land release in the state’s history.

The local councils that are within our franchise area are:

Our network

With an estimated value of $6.7 billion, our network supplies 1.2 million customers, spanning an area over 25,000 square kilometres.

Electricity is traditionally generated a long way from homes and businesses. It is transported at high voltages, to bulk supply points over the transmission system.

Then our traditional ‘poles and wires’ network delivers it to homes and businesses in our area. This network consists of more than 430,000 power poles and streetlight columns, 202 major substations and 32,600 distribution substations connected by nearly 60,600 kilometres (more than the distance from Sydney to London and back) of underground and overhead cables.

It also integrates with renewable energy sources, including 200,000 residential solar connections, industrial solar and embedded large scale batteries.

To ensure we maintain the highest service levels, we’re also leveraging technology and data to plan the grid of the future, where batteries, microgrids and solar technology integrates seamlessly with our traditional distribution network, to power communities into a brighter future.

Providing quick responses, wherever we operate

With such a large area to serve, it’s our responsibility to provide a rapid response to any issues or outages, right across our network.

This is why we operate field services, all the way from the Blue Mountains, through western Sydney, the Illawarra, then down the South Coast, providing our customers with rapid access to the services they need, 24/7.
