The importance of innovation

Given the enhancements in technology and the pace of change in the energy industry, innovation is essential for the successful implementation of our Decarbonising the Grid 2035 strategy. Innovation is essential for us to respond to the emerging challenges and opportunities our customers face from the de-carbonisation and decentralisation of the energy industry to manage the impacts of climate change.

By being innovative, it will support us in being able to:

  • Meet the evolving needs of our customers
  • Integrate renewable energy sources
  • Enhance grid efficiency and reliability
  • Increase our customer engagement and satisfaction
  • Promote environmentally sustainable practices
  • Grow our business

Innovation will be essential for us, in playing a role as an energy service provider and act as the orchestrator to enable decarbonisation via both upstream and downstream activity. We have a responsibility to provide all our customers with access to low-cost clean energy.

By leading the way, we will not only thrive, but emerge as a leading provider of energy solutions in what is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to refocus our business. The energy transition and our role in it will require us to think and act innovatively. To work in ways that we haven't before, to be more agile in responding to our customer's needs. It is also going to be resource-intensive and our ability to deliver on our targets to achieve the objectives of our Decarbonising the Grid 2035 strategy will require all of us to work together in innovative ways to deliver.

Climate Tech Partners

We have a Corporate Circle membership with Climate Tech Partners. CTP bring experts and corporations together, to accelerate decarbonisation through innovation and collaboration.

Their program provides corporations with early access to vetted global climate-tech solutions, opportunities to pilot and co-develop projects and flexible options to engage - whether through investment, trials or strategic support. By joining, corporations can gain strategic insights into emerging technologies, enhance their sustainability leadership profile and connect with CTP’s expert circle of advisors and specialists, who provide technical, strategic and implementation support. This collaboration creates value for both corporations and startups, while also fostering scalable solutions across the energy, transport, industry and mining sectors.

Gridsight

Gridsight is a low-voltage visibility platform, which leverages customer's smart meter data to provide analytics and insights into our grid assets and our customers.

The platform uses machine learning, as well as other data-driven techniques, to identify safety issues on our network, estimate asset utilisation on the low voltage network, detect consumer energy resources (including solar, batteries and EVs) and helps us to understand solar performance and compliance across the network. Within Endeavour Energy, there are an increasing number of users across the business who leverage this platform, including Customer Future Grid, Customer Network Solutions, Planning and System Operations.

Infravision

Infravision is an Australian company that develops aerial robotics and software systems for power grid construction and maintenance.

It's flagship TX system uses drone-assisted technology to string power lines, install hardware and support emergency responses - delivering the same capabilities as helicopters, but with greater safety, greater speed and a lower impact on the environment. This system was used on a challenging Ausconnex job and not only helped reduce the safety risk, but also helped to significantly reduce the job timeline.

VizAR

VizAR is an innovative platform developed by a local startup, through the EnergyLab accelerator program, who enables infrastructure to be visualised in real-world environments using mobile devices and AR headsets.

From major energy assets to urban developments, VizAR delivers accurate, interactive and context-rich experiences, that enhance understanding and engagement. VizAR is currently optimised for engagement and planning, and has the potential to support infrastructure across its entire lifecycle - from concept to construction, operations and training. Key capabilities include:

  • Real-time visualisation of proposed infrastructure in its actual location
  • Enhanced customer experience, allowing communities to explore how new technology will look and feel in their own neighbourhoods
  • Interactive training modules for technical teams
  • Developer engagement in greenfield planning

IND Technology

Intelligent Network Diagnostic Technology (IND.T) is an Australian company, focussed on developing smart, adaptable solutions that proactively safeguard communities from electrical hazards.

To help Endeavour Energy pre-emptively identify potential faults in our network, and help avoid outages, reduce bushfire ignition risk, and prevent catastrophic failures, IND.T provides us with Gen 4 Early Fault Detection sensors that sit on our poles. We use these as an additional inspection tool, alongside other programs, to ensure that we can provide a resilient and reliable network.

IND.T uses sensors, GPS and mobile connections to identify and notify us of the potential faults, allowing us to send out a response team to further investigate. It started in 2020, with 28 units on four feeders and it picked up 16 defects throughout that trial, which weren’t picked up through the normal inspection programs. The program has allowed us to pick up potential issues in a more timely manner. The technology was developed in response to the fires in Victoria and Endeavour Energy was the first distributor outside of NSW to adopt the technology. The start up has since expanded globally into Canada and the US.
